“I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking”
As we approach the end of the liturgical calendar of the Church (Nov 23, the Solemnity of Christ the King) and the beginning of a new one with Advent (Nov 30), the readings we hear take a sudden turn toward tougher themes. This coming weekend Jesus begins to speak to his followers about "the end times" and also about persecutions that are to come. But, importantly, as Jesus tells us about them he promises that he will not abandon us!
First, when talking about the end times, Jesus tells us "See that you not be deceived, for many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he,' and 'The time has come.' Do not follow them!" Just within the last few months we heard talk of the rapture (not an event or teaching that the Catholic Church believes in, by the way) and people worried that the end was here. But, these things have been proclaimed and warned about since the beginning of the Church... and here we are two thousand years later. So, let us not get wrapped up in speculation and schemes, for Jesus assures us elsewhere that no one will know, not even him, but only his Heavenly Father.
Second, when speaking of the coming persecutions, Jesus encourages his followers: "Remember, you are not to prepare your defense beforehand, for I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking that all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute." Jesus promises not only that he will be with us but that he will give us what we need to say. And, when we read the stories of the martyrs, it is amazing that they indeed are given the courage to go on and to speak the words they do to their persecutors. Some were so bold that their own persecutors later converted themselves! And Jesus promises: "You will be hated by all because of my name, but not a hair on your head will be destroyed. By your perseverance you will secure your lives."
So, as we approach the end of our liturgical calendar, and as we daily move ever closer to the end times, whenever they may be, let us remember that Jesus has often told us to not be afraid! While there may be events and calamities worthy of fear, and while our hearts and minds may struggle, let us pray that our souls may remain firm in their belief that Jesus is with us! That there is no need to fear! That Jesus has won the victory already! And if we remain faithful and perseverant "we will secure our lives."
