I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
In this Sunday's Gospel we are blessed to hear from St. Thomas again. A few weeks ago (the 2nd Sunday of Easter) we heard him in his moment of "doubting" the resurrection, but which led to his great statement of faith, saying of Jesus "My Lord and my God!" Now, in this reading which took place before the crucifixion, as he listened to Jesus say to the Apostles that they know the way to His Father's house, Thomas responds quickly and says, "Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?"
This question gives us one of the most important statements Jesus says: "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, then you will also know my Father." It is through Jesus that we know and are able to approach the Father! He is the fullness of God's revelation, the Word Made Flesh! And it is through Him, namely His life, death, resurrection, and ascension, that the gates of heaven are opened to us.
So, let us pray this week that we may become more like Jesus. By following after and becoming more like him, we follow the Way. By learning from him, we learn the Truth. By opening our hearts to him, entering into the very life of God through participation in the sacramental and communal life of the Church, we are given Life. Through these things, may our becoming more like Him be so clear that, when others see us, they are able to see Jesus walking the earth again.
