A sower went out to sow…

In this coming Sunday's Gospel, we hear Jesus tell the Parable of the Sower. In this parable, Jesus lays out a lesson about the Kingdom of God and its growth using language and examples that were familiar to the people who were listening. He wasn't speaking in highly symbolic or confusing terms. He wasn't using complicated theological jargon. He simply was teaching the people in ways that could be understood.

This is an example of what we call "revelation." The story of salvation, as we know it throughout scripture, is the story of God's revealing himself to his people. Whether it is God's speaking with Abraham, Moses, David, or the Prophets, the Old Testament is filled with stories of God's continuing attempts to speak to His people and reveal Himself.

And the Church teaches us that in Jesus, we have the fullness of revelation. No longer does God speak to his people through patriarchs or prophets, but God becomes a man, the Second Person of the Divine Trinity enters into time and space, the Eternal Word of the Father becomes flesh. And when the Incarnate God teaches and interacts with people, teaching them about Himself and about the Father and the Holy Spirit, teaching them about the Kingdom, and teaching them how to live, he does so in ways that are understandable and accessible.

All of this is a reminder to us that God loves us. God wants us to know Him and to trust Him. God desires relationship with us. God does not want to be distant from us or complicated and confusing. God wants to dwell in our hearts. So, let us pray this week that we may remember that. While who God is and how God works will always be somewhat of a mystery, God's love for us and desire to know us is certain because His Son came and told us so.
